The 2015 Icon Awards
Prestige, Class and Michelle Visage – The Icon Awards are set to take Glasgow by storm.
Scotland always seems to be the neglected, less glamorous cousin when it comes to LGBTI awards night, but with The Icon Awards coming to Glasgow that’s gonna change!
This super glam event with be held at the fabulous Crowne Plaza hotel on Friday 9th October and with 19 trophies to hand out it will surely be an amazing night. “Celebrating diversity and rewarding those most deserving across Scotland”, The Icon Awards categories include “volunteer of the year” being supported by UK Black Pride, “wedding venue of the year” sponsored by Tartan Partnerships and the hotly contested “employer of the year”which is this year being supported by OUTstanding.
As well as this, human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar lending his support to the “business pres of the year” award and a special award for “business of the year”.
Votes are open to the public with the full list found on the Icon Awards website, where you can also vote/nominate for those you think should win.
The three awards not voted for by the public are, a special Waverley Care special recognition award, one for the chosen charity to reward one of their own, the hotly anticipated Icon Award, which is being chosen by organisers and the committee, and one being collected by a lady some of you may know. The stunning Michelle Visage, Mama V, MV, whatever you want to call her, will be flying into Glasgow on October 9th to attend the ceremony, and pick up The Icon Awards, first straight ally gong, for her long term commitment and support to the LGBTI community.
Michelle Visage gushed “I am truly honoured that The Icon Awards have chosen to award me as their first ally winner, and I am truly excited to be coming to Glasgow for the final. The LGBTI community have been loyal to me since I started in this business in 1989 and have never left my side. I have so much love, respect, compassion and admiration for you all, across the globe. I will continue to not only support, but champion LGBTI rights across the world, in the hopes that one day gay hate crimes and having to fight for equal rights is a thing of the past. We have come a long way, but have so much further to go and together we will succeed.
This award means the world to me, and I can’t wait to share this special night with you all, see you on October 9th”
Amongst the diamonds and tiaras, The Icon Awards final will see the best of Scottish talent perform and many well known faces attend. Guests will be treated to a lavish three course menu, wine, and drinks from sponsors Keglevich and long standing LGBTI supporters Absolut.
Other supporters of the event include the Royal Air Force, who famously banned LGBTI identifying people from joining up, who are now seen as one of the most forward thinking employers, appearing on the Stonewall top 100. Kiehls cosmetics, another brand that has long stood for LGBTI rights is also on board to ensure all guests will be glowing from ear to ear.
Not only will the 18 lucky winners receive a lovely trophy, but an abundance of gifts will also be bestowed upon them, including designer belts from Scottish designer Christian McLeod, who is preparing to launch his flag shop store on Ingram Street in Glasgow.
With support from outlets as diverse as top Scottish publication The Sunday Herald leading as principle partner, to radio stations Gaydio and Xpress Radio Scotland, and top LGBTI publications Gaia Magazine, Kelidoscot, QS and The Gay UK, this will be the best night of the year!
