Star Wars’ gay Sub-plots

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was pretty much everything we wanted it to be. It felt like the original three movies, the characters were strong, the storyline was solid (despite showing a fair few similarities to A New Hope) and the diversity of characters was on point. Thus making the newest addition to the Star Wars saga a good apology for the prequels. (mild spoilers ahead)

We had a super tall, beautiful Gwendoline Christie playing a female stormtrooper and let’s face it, female villans are the best. We had the young Nigerian actor John Boyega from Peckham play one of the main characters, Finn, we had a latino actor play possible gay character Poe and best of all, we had the beautiful Daisy Ridley playing the main character of Rey. As well as looking like the love child of Keira Knightley and Hayley Atwell, Rey’s character was a strong independent woman who don’t need no man, literally. The lack of romantic sub-plot between Finn and Rey was not only awesome because it didn’t involve any forced, chemistry-free straight love, but also because it’s led to the speculation that her character might be gay.

Even if that’s not true, the internet has been going crazy for the hints of romance between Poe and Finn. Oscar Isaac, the man behind Poe has said in interviews that he played Poe as if he were gay which is kind of amazing considering he’s meant to be part of the new main trio of the Star Wars movies after the original Luke, Leia and Han Solo. Let’s all just take the time to appreciate how amazing it would be if we had a franchise, possibly the biggest one ever, that celebrated gay love. Also, it might be a long shot having an entirely gay main trio but we are also banking on Rey having an eye for the ladies too. If not, we always have the goddess that is Carrie Fisher to draw inspiration and great life advice from.
