It’s Bi Visibility Week!
It’s Bi Visibility week and people all over the world are stepping out from behind their invisibility cloaks and celebrating bisexual awareness. From waving flags proudly in the street to sporting the pink, purple and blue bi flag colours in the form of lipstick, baked goods and clothing. To bring awareness to the often-overlooked sexuality, we compiled a list of stereotypes/things not to say to bisexuals.
“Yeah but do you like girls or guys more?” Some people prefer guys to girls or vice versa but for some it’s an exact 50/50 split. It’s not always a black and white issue but most bisexuals find the question patronising, and let’s be honest, it’s nobodies business either.
“It must be nice to pass off as straight?”– Why would somebody ‘pass off’ as straight if they are not straight? Sure you might be able to keep up with the illusion for a while but cue a hot person of the same sex and that illusion is destroyed. Besides, nobody should have to ‘pass off’ as something they’re not.
“What do you mean you aren’t presented in the media, there’s loads of bisexuals?” No, there aren’t. It’s very rarely clearly specified that they are bisexual. Also, they are slutty, always so slutty, why do people always assume bisexual people are slutty? Can the bisexuals get some fair representation please!?
‘Bisexuals are just experimenting until they realise who they really like’ Remember how much it hurt when people said that to you when you came out? Well it hurts just as much when bisexuals hear it. They can’t help who they find attractive, they can’t help who they fall in love with. Even if somebody only falls for somebody of the same sex once or twice and then dates somebody of the opposite sex for a while, they are still bisexual.
“Can you help us spice up our sex life?”– Bisexuals hear this from straight couples far too often. They are not objects to use for your own fun. This is the single most disgusting thing bisexuals get asked, so never ask it.
‘You must be up for anything in the bedroom then?’ Again, this reflects the stereotype that bisexuals are sluts. It’s not true, there are bisexuals that are prude or play it safe in the bedroom and there are others who are more carefree. Either are legit, but just don’t assume.
“Bisexuals always end up with someone from the opposite sex” Possibly the one stereotype that hurts bisexuals the most. People are people, if they cheat it’s because they are cheating, not because they are bisexual. If a bisexual does end up with someone of the opposite sex it’s because they just happened to fall for them, but remember, they are still bisexual. That doesn’t change.
